They offer high-level overviews and the ability to drill down to the data behind your KPIs; they allow you to carry out advanced analysis of performance and underlying trends; and they make operational reporting a lot easier. A well-crafted BI system will do all this from a single platform.

Familiar software tools play an important role in BI systems. They enable non-technical users to create ad-hoc reports and visualise data in different ways. They allow automated reporting and scheduling, and the notification of exceptions; and they permit access through devices such as mobile phones as well as PCs.
